After receiving a B.F.A. degree in painting from the University of Florida in 1984, Mr. Whittle spent two years in Zaire, Africa as a Peace Corps volunteer. He returned to U.F. and received a M.F.A. degree in printmaking in 1990.
Museums that have exhibited Professor Whittle's work include the Krakow Academy of Art in Poland, The Center of Contemporary Art in Miami, Florida, The Polk Museum of Art in Lakeland, Florida, The Greenville County Museum of Art in South Carolina, The St. Petersburg Museum of Art, and The Capitol Gallery in the State Capitol Building in Tallahassee, Florida, The Columbus Museum of Art in Georgia, and The Huntington Museum of Art in West Virginia and in many university and commercial galleries across the United States.
Professor Whittle has received an Individual Artist's Fellowship from the State of Florida and several Faculty Development Grants from Converse College. Awards for his work include The Photography Award at The Anderson Art Exhibit, First Place at the Cobb Invitational in Atlanta, and The Award of Merit from Exhibition 220 in West Virginia which featured his work on the exhibition catalogue. His work has been seen in the book New American Paintings. He has recently completed his first book project The Dead Father Poems, which he illustrated.
Professor Whittle arrived in 1992 at Converse College where he teaches printmaking, painting, and drawing. At Converse, he has also organized and accompanied Art/Art History Travel Programs to New York City, St. Petersburg (Russia), Amsterdam, and Paris.
