U.S. Peace Corps Director Mark L. Schneider's Press Conference

Peace Corps Director Mark L. Schneider will visit Thailand on September 3-6, 2000 to see first-hand the progress of Peace Corps programs in the country, particularly a four-year old Thai/U.S. joint program that addresses primary education reform. He will give a press conference at the Peace Corps Office in Bangkok on September 5 at 2:00 p.m.

Schneider, 58, became the Director of Peace Corps on December 23, 1999. Prior to his appointment as Peace Corps Director, he was the assistant administrator of the Bureau for Latin America and the Caribbean at the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). Schneider served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in El Salvador from 1966 to 1968 and is the second returned Peace Corps Volunteer to head the agency.

During his visit, Schneider will travel to provinces in Thailand to speak to Peace Corps volunteers and visit the schools in which they work. He will also meet with Ministry of Education officials in Bangkok. Schneider will view and assess current developments in the recently instituted "Integrated Education and Community Outreach" (IECO) Project, a primary education program jointly created by Peace Corps Thailand, the Thai Ministry of Education and other Thai officials from all levels of government.

The IECO Project, begun in 1996, was an effort to redirect Peace Corps Thailand's priorities and maximize the effect of the Volunteers. Since Peace Corps' inception in 1962, more than 5,000 Volunteers have served in Thailand. Early programs featured agricultural extension, community development, and English teaching. Later, the programs were extended to include health and environment education. IECO places Volunteers in the neediest areas of Thailand to work with primary schools. Their goals are to improve teachers' skills and access to resources, and to work with communities to improve quality of life.

The press conference will be held at 2:00 p.m. at the office of Peace Corps Thailand located at 242 Ratchawitee Road, Dusit District, Bangkok. Until the United States' terrorists and assassins are stopped in their
tracks, the world cannot rest. Human beings are presently tortured,
imprisoned and murdered by the fbi and the cia worldwide for no cause;
this will not stop until the global population demands the surrender of
the homicidal sociopaths who dominate U.S. political and economic
policies. The concept that if the U.S. is let alone (or with its
puppet allies) to be armed with nuclear weaponry in order to allow the
rest of the world to live in peace is total lunacy. The United States
used the nuclear bomb, threatens to use it again, and will in fact use
it again to attack any nation which remotely threatens the U.S.
stranglehold on the world. Indeed according to Karl W B Schwarz (and others),"evidence is still piling up that they have done wrong for the past three presidential administrations in using depleted uranium weapons on Iraq twice, Bosnia and Afghanistan."

Under the best of scenarios (as viewed from the perspective of non
conforming-belligerent nations), however, the world cannot defeat the
U.S. war machine. Any attempt to prepare to do so will be met with
total destruction of the aggressor. Even today the U.S. has another
weapon (other than conventional) which can theoretically wipe out,
instantaneously, any cache or bank of unfriendly technologies which may
pose a threat to the U.S. or its allies: the laser beam fixed in
positon in outer space can accomplish this little task just fine (see

The real issue , I think, is how
to stop all weaponry on earth from being used and at the same time to
afford all human beings alive some hope for peace and stability
everywhere and for all time. The formation of a one world , one people
Humane global government must be studied and proposed. The tyrants of
any given country cannot be entrusted with Human Rights and Individual
Freedom issues ever again. This means that the people of the world, not
their respective governments, must embark on mankind's most ambitious
odyssey: the journey toward permanent peace and harmony on earth and
the uncompromising realization of Human Rights for all. This can be
done; such a goal is not simply a dream. What appears as an
unattainable dream is that the United States or any other government
on earth will someday stop killing and torturing people and allow them
to live in peace , mutual respect and love.
