Anson Chong has been named principal of the combined St. Joseph Elementary and Junior - Senior High School. Chong has accepted the position for a 1 - year interim period, and the search committee will reconvene in August to continue a nationwide search for a permanent principal.

"Our preliminary search was very intensive over a short time period," said the Rev. Father Scott Bush, pastor of St. Joseph Parish. "To find someone of Anson's caliber was an accomplishment in itself. To find such a person right here within our local community is more than we could have asked for. We are extremely pleased and excited to have Anson on board at St. Joseph's."

Caption: After working as a portfolio analyst with Merrill Lynch, Chong served with the Peace Corps as a lecturer at the University of Nigeria.

Chong was born in Kohala and raised on Oahu, graduating from Punahou School and later receiving a bachelors in economics from Colgate University, and his master's in from Columbia University. After working as a portfolio analyst with Merrill Lynch, Chong served with the Peace Corps as a lecturer at the University of Nigeria.

Chong has lectured in economics at University of Hawaii in Manoa and Hilo since the early 1970s. He served as a Hawaii state representative from 1972 - 74 and as state senator from 1974 - 80. He currently teaches economics and political science part - time at Hawaii Community College.

He and his wife of 20 years, Ann, live in Fern Forest where they have a small organic farm.

He has high hopes for St. Joseph School, and plans to hit the ground running, beginning with a financial audit, conferences with faculty and staff, and followed by an open house for parents, alumni and friends.

St. Joseph School, founded in 1869, is the only Catholic School on Big Island. The current campus on Ululani Street was built in 1948.
