Ambassador Robert Gelbard graduated from Colby in 1964 and has had a distinguished career in government service, including diplomatic posts as the U.S. Ambassador to Bolivia and more recently the U.S. Ambassador to Indonesia. Before the post in Indonesia he was the special representative of the president and the secretary of state for implementation of the Dayton Peace Accords, working to bring peace to the former Yugoslavia. Earlier in his career he served as deputy assistant secretary of state for Africa, principal assistant secretary of state for inter-American affairs, and assistant secretary of state for international narcotics control and law enforcement. Gelbard is currently the senior vice president for international affairs and government relations for ICN Pharmaceuticals. After earning a bachelor's degree in history at Colby, he served in the Peace Corps and earned a master's degree in public administration at Harvard University. His daughter, Alexandra, is a junior at Colby. He lives in Washington, D.C.
