Kate Raftery Named Acting President

(from the June 1998 issue of the Partners newsletter)

Partners of the Americas Board Chair Eleanor Jones has named Kate Raftery, vice president for leadership and training, to serve as acting president of the organization until a replacement for departing President Bill Reese is chosen. Raftery joined the Partners staff in 1984 and has led numerous program initiatives. She has directed the International Fellowship in Community Development since 1994.

Jones noted that Raftery "has been a strong organizational leader in the area of volunteer management and partnership development, since she joined Partners. Kate has an excellent relationship with many of the chapters throughout our network." Raftery has worked with the Board in the design and implementation of its organizational development program – the Excellence program. In addition, she has designed various training modules for Partners leaders.

Raftery brought to Partners over a decade of service in Latin America and the Caribbean as a staff member and volunteer with the Peace Corps. Among the various positions that she held with Peace Corps are deputy director for Peace Corps in Latin America and the Caribbean, programming and training Officer for the region, Peace Corps director in Honduras and deputy director of Peace Corps in Paraguay. Raftery also served on Peace Corps training staffs in Costa Rica and El Salvador.

On accepting the position of acting president as of May 21, Raftery said, "It is a great honor for me to have been asked to serve in this interim position. Partners of the Americas has played a major role in my life for well over a decade. Partners signifies for me the best in volunteerism and community service. I have been given a great opportunity to meet and work with many Partner volunteers over the years. As an organization we are at a critical juncture in our development. The staff and I, are committed to building the legacy Bill Reese has left and, at the same time, move Partners into a prominent place within the international volunteer movement for the 21st century."

A search committee, chaired by Board Vice Chair Donald Wagner, will present the top candidates for president at the July meeting.
