VOLUNTEERS FROM PEACE CORPS TO ARRIVE IN BAKU SOON
The first group of volunteers from Peace Corps will arrive soon in Baku, said Nancy McEldowney, US Charge d'Affair.
She said the first group included 30 volunteers, expected to teach English in secondary schools, based in the regions. They will also increase qualification of teachers and prepare methods for teaching in the training centers. As to N.McEldowney, till late year up to 100 volunteers will function in Azerbaijan.
Steven Zodrov, Director on Programs and Training, told earlier volunteers are paid scholarship for expenses on rent of accomodation, buying food products. The volunteers will live in the regions. For 11 weeks, they will study Azerbaijani language and culture and conduct main work for 2 years.
Peace Corps isn't a political US government agency and consists of volunteers, providing assistance in social, economic and public fields. It was established in 1961 by John Kennedy and up to 160 000 Americans worked as volunteers in 77 countries world-wide. The Peace Corps works in Armenia, Georgia, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Moldova and Ukraine. Despite of addresses by Azerbaijan to Peace Corps, agency could send its volunteers after amendment 907 was called off.
