U.S. Peace Corps - Azerbaijan

The Peace Corps is a governmental agency that promotes peace around the world by sharing one of America's greatest resources: Volunteers. The Peace Corps has been operating for over forty years in more than 135 countries with three simple but powerful goals: to help the peoples of interested countries and areas in meeting their needs for trained men and women; to help promote a better understanding of the American people on the part of the peoples served; and, to help promote a better understanding of other peoples on the part of the American people. Peace Corps is in process of establishing initial programming activity in Azerbaijan and therefore will be recruiting the following local positions to support the Volunteers.

Language and Cultural Facilitators (LCFs)

Short-Term Positions (up to 5 months)

(Work commences in Baku but eventually shifts to rural areas outside of Baku)

Position Summary:

" LCFs will participate in language Training of Trainers activities to acquire knowledge/skills to handle the LCF position as a language and cultural trainer.

" Once trained, LCFs will conduct Azeri language training classes with small groups (4-5) of American Peace Corps Volunteers (PCVs) during Pre-Service Training (PST). Trainers will need to follow prescribed curriculum effectively using a variety of language and cultural training techniques and methodologies.

" At the same time, LCFs will serve as a key informants of Azeri customs, cultural norms, and values for the PCVs while in training.

" LCFs will live in the training community and acts as primary liaison between PCVs, their host families, and community.

" Participate in the evaluation of PCVs suitability for PC service and of the language-cultural training program.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

1. University student or graduate.

2. Excellent command of written and spoken Azeri and English.

3. Good knowledge of Azeri customs and culture.

4. Good interpersonal skills, ability to relate to people of diverse backgrounds, and to communicate effectively with Peace Corps Trainees and Pre-Service Training staff.

5. Willingness to live and work outside of Baku for duration of Pre-Service Training (nearly 3 months), including being hosted by a local Azeri family in the individual training communities.

DESIRED EXPERIENCE: Designing and conducting trainings/workshops; and experience with international organizations.
