A group of United States Peace Corps volunteers were sworn in yesterday to offer their teaching and health care services in Mpumalanga for the next two years.

The group was sworn in at the Elukwatini environmental centre near Badplaas after undergoing an orientation and induction programme by living with local families.

'In previous years volunteers who were attached to their training families had a memorable experience, and I trust this experience is shared by the volunteers that have pledged their service today,' said Mpumalanga deputy director general of education, Tim Mashinini.

He said Peace Corps volunteers fulfilled part of President Thabo Mbeki's call for volunteers in the reconstruction and development of South Africa.

'Your courage, dedication and selfless efforts to assist in the development of our human resources through outcomes based education, in strategies to combat the effect of HIV/Aids, and by engaging in other community projects, bear testimony to this reality,' he said.

He reminded the volunteers that schools were preparing for the final year examinations for Grade 12 learners whose results would determine if they could enter university, technikon or other higher education institutions.

Teachers also had to be prepared to introduce outcomes based education in certain grades as of next year.

He said he hoped their stay would not only enrich those they helped, but that they, in turn, would be enriched by the experience
