Washington County Historical Society will sponsor a lecture, "The History of History," with Chet Orloff, director emeritus of the Oregon Historical Society, on Nov. 19 at 3:30 p.m. in the Collins Gallery at the Historical Museum.

Orloff will host a conversation on "the history of history" in Oregon, beginning with the earliest forms of remembering and documenting life among the first Oregonians based a record of their presence on the earth and the rocks, and in their tools.

He will present a perspective of Oregon's historical continuity, and talk about history as "practiced" during the 20th century. The Crossroads Lecture encourages audience participation in the discussion.

Throughout his career, which began in Afghanistan as a Peace Corps teacher, Orloff has worked to create a sense of place. His work includes teaching, writing, exhibit design and development, and interviewing. He is the current managing director of the Pamplin Institute, and initiated Oregon's Lewis and Clark Bicentennial Celebration.

The lecture is free to WCHS members, PCC students and staff, and is $2 for others. For information, contact the museum at 503-645-5353. The museum is on the Rock Creek Campus of Portland Community College, on NW Springville Road.
