RICHARD'S LEGACY: Through thick and thin, including a stroke that left him speechless for a while, Richard Singletary worked on his book about Bruce Onobrakpeya, a contemporary Nigerian artist who's been the focus of Singletary's study since 1994.

Now the book's published and 500 copies already have been shipped to Nigeria. Singletary will have copies of the work for local purchases.

Long a teacher of English as a second language in the Portsmouth Public Schools, Singletary is somewhat of a Renaissance man. He also is a musician and has taught many children how to play stringed instruments.

As a Peace Corps volunteer, he was in Liberia in the 1960s.

Singletary's love of art is evident in his home and he has never lost focus on Onobrakpeya and his influence on contemporary art. He has visited African nations on a number of occasions and received a grant from the Ford Foundation to complete the book. He received a doctorate in African art from Virginia Commonwealth University in 1999.
