A United States Peace Corps team will visit Sri Lanka next week to assess a possible return to operations on the island.

The team will be led by Dr. Robert Reid, chief of operations for Europe, the Mediterranean, and Asia.

While in Sri Lanka, the assessment team will meet with appropriate senior government officials and representatives from volunteer organizations.

Team members will evaluate the political, security, and infrastructure environments in Sri Lanka in advance of a possible return to operations in Sri Lanka. In addition to a short stay in Colombo, the assessment team will travel to a variety of other locations around the country.

Since 1961, more than 170,000 volunteers have served in the Peace Corps around the world, working in such diverse fields as education, heath, HIV/AIDS education and awareness, information technology, business development, the environment, and agriculture, state a media release from the US Embassy.
