PEACE CORPS VOLUNTEERS SWORN-IN

A swear-in ceremony of the volunteers of the American humanitarian organization “Peace Corps” took place in the Sumgait Culture Palace of Chemists after Uzeyir Hacibeyov on December 12.
For three months staying in Sumgait, Lankaran, Ganja, 27 Americans, English language specialists studied Azerbaijani language. Living in families, they learnt the customs, culture of Azerbaijani nation. They will stay in Azerbaijan for two years, conduct training-workshops with English language teachers in remote districts, and teach schoolchildren. The number of volunteers will reach 300 in the future.
”Peace Corps” volunteers swore allegiance to the US Constitution and pledged to fulfill their voluntary mission.
The volunteers expressed gratitude to families for their hospitality and care.
The ceremony was attended by the U.S. ambassador to Azerbaijan Reno Harnish, head of Sumgait Executive Power Vagif Aliyev, deputy Education Minister Elmar Gasimov, Peace Corps director for Azerbaijan William Levine.
