Hey everybody!!!

I have just about made it through the first work week. I have been soooooo busy everyday with classes on all different types of things. I just found out today where I will be living for the next two weeks-a very little town called Uis. If you look for it on a map it is near the brandberg mountain. I also got my language assignment today-I am speaking Damara-Nama, better known as click. It will be a very difficult language to learn but I am looking forward to it because when done correctly it is so very beautiful. I am going to have some time in the following weeks to prepare better correspodence but for now know I am have begun the adventure and I sure after I return from the bush I will have a few stories to share. Happy Halloween to all!!!!

Josh-

Ps I will attempt the first top 5 list.

Top 5 differences:

5. I am a minority

4. The bugs are HUGE!!!!!

3. All the immunizations make me feel kinda funny :]

2. I eat meat at every meal (what kind of meat I have no idea)

Hey everybody!!

First off thank you for all the support you have given me. I am in Uis and it is absolutely amazing!! I am in the shadow of the largest mountain in Namibia and it changes soo much as the day goes by. I am living with Thulinda and her 2 sometimes 5 children. I have had a good experience thus far with her and expect it only to get better. I taught my first class this week and it went well. The schedule has been chaotic but in a couple of months it should slow down so that I can do a better job of keeping everyone informed. I am here for another week I will teach some more then I will be back in Okahandja and I will find out my where my site will be. Next week I will have more time to answer emails personally, I hope. If not keep sending support I think of all often and I cant wait to tell all what happens next. Pat anne- thank you for the letter, I am glad to hear you bowled in my honor. Matt the mud flap sooners dont stand a chance. but send me the updated scores and records, I dont even know who won the series. I will talk soon.

So neat to hear from you and that all is well and exciting. Can't wait to hear more!

Heading to Asheville next weekend for our 4th anniversary. We'll have a toast for you while in the mountains...

Hello all!

!Gai //goas!

Things are going well. I hope this finds everyone in good spirits. I have still been way too busy, and I am moving around too much to settle into a routine-so better correspondence is soon to come. I am at the site that I will be for the next two years, which is the same as my training site. I will be in /Uis. The slashes and random punctuation are not a mistype, rather that is how they spell the clicks. I am in the north west about 120k from the coast on the edge of the desert. I will have a house directly across from the secondary school, where I will teach english to grades 8,9, and 10. There is an exam to get into grade 11 so I have incentive to help these kids graduate. I have already spent two weeks here, I am starting to meet people and I have been welcomed with open arms. My host family consisted of a 26 year old single mother of two and she also takes care of her nephew who is an orphan, he is 9. They are very nice and I am glad I will be near my "family". It is funny in just two weeks time it was still very hard to say goodbye-this was before I knew I would be living here. The community is the skel;eton remains of a former tin mine-the mine has sinced closed and these people in the location-the part of town created for blacks during apartied-is all that really remains. Unemployment, aids, illiteracy, and little support from the gov. are just some of the issues facing me and my new home. Through it all the people I have met are warm caring and have a true sense of the word community. The town is about 1500 people, and as you may guess, it is very easy to pick me out. I will be here off and on until jan when the next school year begins. I am happy with my assignment and the opportunities I have are amazing, I will be able to make some good things happen in the next couple of years. It is odd when I left two years seemed like forever, and now that I have been here and month two years does not seem like that long considering the things I want to accomplish. There will be more on all of that later. The support I have received is great and helps me more than you know. I promise i will send letters once I settle in because there is NOTHING to do when I am not in school. But please dnot let this stop anyone from sending me things-esp. large packages with lots of stuff. HAHAHAH!

Know that I think of all of you often and I miss you!!

Love josh

Hey everyone-

I have just a little time so I will try to fit in as much as possible. Logistics first! The address is still correct mom and I am getting letters thank you. I will have a new address soon so I will post that as soon as I can. Julie-I am glad to hear the teacher is excited because I think that can be a wonderful opportunity for some culture exchange-and dont worry about sara's comment we all know what a little punk she is!! Niccolo I am thinking of you often as you embark on a new life as well I wish I could be there and it is not the same living in a different country without having your twisted point of view. I miss all of you crazy people!!

So currently I am in Uis again, my new home town. I just took a test today and passed so it looks like they are going to let me stick around for a while. I got a few comments about thanksgiving and dont worry I had some turkey and dressing. It was great my training group-#22 all rallied together to prepare the feast. I carved turkeys like I was from TEXAS!! To be specific four of them in under 20 mins. WoW! I am settling in now the group is bonding I will get my feet wet the next two weeks teaching. I will be teaching English, Geography, and Afican history-wish me all kinds of luck. i have already been through some ups and downs adjusting, but overall I am doing well. We did lose 4 already in our group so we are all going through the same stuggles which helps. I will be here for two weeks in the hottest place known to man-I have been covered in sweat fo the past 48hrs-no joke!! It is Africa hot!!! After uis i will spend the holidays at the beach in a town called Swakopmund it should be nice!!!I will keep it short but I will try to write again soon. I think of all of you often and the support is amazing it helps more that you know- I look forward to hearing from you, in my world this is a big day to get on the computer!!!My trainer Daniel says !gai !goas. it sounds like you are having a great time (even if the weather is a little hot:). we miss you here in athens. matt and i put up a christmas tree over thanksgiving, and i'm afraid we are responsible for inspiring tex to spend the day in the kitchen baking pumpkin bread and cookies. by the way, the sooners lost the big 12 championship (matt did not speak for a few hours), and georgia lost the SEC championship. apparently our football teams are snoozing through the end of the season. hope you are having a great time!! Hey everyone!!!

I am back for my weekly installment. Thank all of you so much for signing the guestbook-I look forward to hearing from all!! Greg thanks for the package I could not remember if I sent an email, so if not it was great and I am still enjoying the contents!! Mom- I have been recieving your letters and it sounds as if pat anne is bowling quite well!! To all-my address for the next 2 years will be joshua Davis (obviously)

Petrus !Ganeb Secondary School /

Private Bag 1002/

Uis, Namibia.

Don't worry if you have recently sent things to the Peace Corps address-mail is a very serious thing for all the volunteers and the Peace Corps maks sure we get our things as soon as possible. I will also have access to a telephone at the school so I may be able to talk to a few of you in the New Year!!

Well to catch up on this weeks activities. The Peace Corps set up a two week model school for us to practice teaching before the real deal in Jan. I am teaching 9th grade english, 8th grade history and geography and 10th/11th grade geography, plus pe. It went well-i guess the important thing is I survived!!

The kids are surprisingly well behaved-but I think it is because I look like the white ghost standing in front of them. The hardest thing I dealt with this week was teaching to a class where one learned can finish exercises in 5 mins and another cannot even read. It is difficult. I also climbed a mountain around my town and had the most amazing view of the location, the closed down mine, and brandburg mt( the tallest in Namibia) in the distance. We could just barely see dunes off to the west and the vast expanse of land that is all around. On Sat. my small training group of 6 were able to go to Brandburg to see the White Lady- it is a cave drawing dated between 2000 and 10000 years old. There was a 2.5k hike back into a valley along a dry river bed to get to it. It was AMAZING!! It has survived sooo long!!

Today is sun. I am going to prepare today for class this week and I am really looking forward to next weekend. Our community based training is over and we will go back to Okahandja then to Swakop-aka the beach-for Christmas. I will do my best to get to a computer before christmas but if I am unable know that I am thinking of all of you and I wish I could be with you. I am sure this will be the most unique Chrismas I will have ever spent. Training only lasts about another month and most of the main components are out of the way. I am on the down hill slide. It will be nice to get to Uis as a teacher and have the reigns of the peace corps lifted a bit. I have led a bit of a sheltered exsistence thusfar-but it is for my own saftey and security (dont worry mom!!!)

Keep me informed of the football I have no clue what is happening!! How did Tech do? Tex-Thanks for the mail I am getting it - and I promise to do a better job soon. Once I take my perm. position I will have ample time on my hands so I will be much more personalized!! Promise!
