Class of 1997 College graduate Carson Murray is leaving Sept. 29 to become a chemistry teacher at a secondary school in Tanzania with the Peace Corps. Murray said she will be teaching students of a wide variety of ages and also participating in a secondary service project, perhaps coaching a soccer team.

"I'm happy to be teaching, but I'm more interested in getting involved with the community," Murray said.

After arriving in Tanzania, Murray will participate in three months of immersion training to acclimate to the local culture. Then she will go to her service site -- she will not learn specifics until she arrives -- to live and work there for two years.

Murray said she is awaiting her stay with a mixture of excitement and anxiety, but a note from a fellow University graduate also serving in the Peace Corps helped allay her worries.

"I got a letter from a friend saying it was the best decision she ever made," she said. "It wasn't so much the place, but the people -- they were so friendly to her. Which I must say put a big smile on my face and a lot of my fears to rest."
