Sequatchie Valley Institute

Working towards a sustainable future through education, example & land conservation.

Route 1, Box 304
Whitwell, TN 37397

Sequatchie Valley Institute, located on 300 acres of forest land, gives visitors a view of what it is like to "live off the land". They are dedicated to growing all their foods organically, building all their structures from the rocks and trees of the mountainside.

Four acres of edible landscaping with fruiting tree, vines, shrubs, herbs and self-sowing annuals blend into the all-embracing forest and attracts an array of butterflies, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and mammals. Organic gardens produce food, teas, and medicines for staff and visitors, and are a laboratory for innovative techniques in ecological agriculture.

“Moonshadow” and “Mud Dauber” , hand-crafted from earth and salvaged materials, are the structures at the institute. “Moonshadow” is not only a residence but also is utilized as an office, meeting space, studio and library. All electricity is provided by the sun through photovoltiacs. Water comes by gravity from a mountain spring. “Mud Dauber” appears to have sprouted out the ground like a mushroom and is used as a home for Patrick and Ashley (Kimmons) Ironwood, daughter and son-in-law of the Kimmons. The attached solar greenhouse to “Mud Dauber” will warm the house, grow winter food, and recycle waste water for gardens.

The mission of the Sequatchie Valley Institute is to offer society an opportunity to experience and learn about living in harmony with nature by providing: education, art and research opportunities; land conservation and restoration; a dynamic model residence and learning center; a vision for attaining a sustainable future.
