Morocco RPCV Valerie Staats named Executive Director of Pittsburgh Cares
Pittsburgh Cares names exec. director
The board of Pittsburgh Cares, a nonprofit volunteer organization, named Valerie Staats executive director.
Ms. Staats, who assumed her job on Jan. 1, will lead Pittsburgh Cares' 2,700 volunteers who work in service projects at more than 100 local community groups, the organization said on Monday.
She joined Pittsburgh Cares from the European Union Studies Association, a nonprofit scholarly association with members in 40 countries, where she spent seven years as executive director. Earlier, she worked as a national fund-raiser the American Friends Service Committee (Quakers) and a program developer in the Chicago office of the U.S. Peace Corps.
In addition, Ms. Staats taught for 14 years at colleges and universities in Pittsburgh and Chicago. She holds a master's degree in literature from the University of Iowa and a Ph.D. in public and international affairs from the University of Pittsburgh.
Ms. Staats has been a volunteer at Pittsburgh Cares since 1998 and a project coordinator since 2001, the organization said. She also serves on the board of the Friends of Carnegie Library.
