Haiti Peace Corps Volunteer Renee Low helps new school in the village where she works
Donations overwhelming for school in Haiti
Lawrence area residents responded to a Tonganoxie woman's plea for help in building a new school in the Haitian village where she works as a Peace Corps volunteer.
Renee Low had hoped to raise $3,000-$5,000 for the school while home for the holidays. But after stories about her efforts appeared in the Journal-World and on 6News, donors contributed more than $8,000.
Low said she was overwhelmed by the response and said the school would be built before her tour ends in May. Thanks to the donations, the new school also will get benches, chalkboards and books, Low said.
Volunteers at Trinity Episcopal Church, where the school construction fund is set up, said Monday that checks still coming in would be sent to Low, who left Monday for Haiti.
