Boston Educator to Address Ouachita Audience on “Passionate” Teaching and Learn

ARKADELPHIA–Dr. Robert L. Fried, associate professor of education at Northeastern University in Boston, Massachusetts, will speak as part of the Birkett Williams Lecture Series at Ouachita Baptist University on Thursday, February 5 at 7:30 p.m. in McBeth Recital Hall in Mabee Fine Arts Center.

The title of his lecture will be "Changing the ‘Game of School’–What’s ‘Passion’ Got to Do With It?" The public is invited to attend the lecture. There is no admission charge.

Fried will be the guest of honor at an invitation only dinner beginning at 6 p.m. on Thursday evening in the Banquet Room of OBU’s Evans Student Center. He also will be speaking the following day, February 6 to classes in the department of education at Ouachita.

Fried has served in the Peace Corps in Senegal, West Africa, coordinated community-based learning centers in New Hampshire, and been a consultant to Fortune 500 companies and state and national governmental agencies in educational policy, community school partnerships, and "passionate" teaching and learning.

He is a recognized authority and consultant in the areas of educational philosophy, curriculum, supervision, mentoring, educational philosophy, planning and empowerment, spirituality and the academic community, alignment of grading with teaching goals, political factors in education, and the role of the community and family in the maturation of the educational process.

Fried has worked within local, state and national judicial and legislative arenas to fully define and interpret various precedents in educational reform. He has spoked to international symposiums in education empowerment and reform in Italy, Thailand and Puerto Rico.

He is the author of: "The Passionate Teacher: A Practical Guide;" "The Passionate Learner; How Teachers and Parents Can Help Children Reclaim the Joy of Discovery;" "The Skeptical Visionary: A Seymour Sarason Education Reader;" and "The Game of School: Why We All Play: How It Hurts Learning: What To Do To Change It." In addition, Fried has contributed to chapters in published books and professional journals on achieving school excellence.

He has taught in public schools and prior to teaching at Northeastern, Fried was on the faculty of the University of Hartford.

Fried is a member of the American Educational Research Association and Phi Delta Kappa International Education Honor Society, and the Coalition of Essential Schools.

He received his bachelor of arts degree in 1963 from City University of New York. His master of arts degree was earned in 1969 from the University of New Hampshire, and his doctor of education diploma was granted in 1976 by Harvard University. His doctoral thesis was on community learning centers. He has been a faculty member at Northeastern since 1998.

The Birkett Williams Lecture Series at Ouachita honors the late Birkett Williams of Cleveland, Ohio, a 1910 graduate and benefactor of OBU. In 1977, Williams established a generous endowment to "extend the concepts of a liberal arts education beyond the classroom environment," according to Dr. Andrew Westmoreland, president of Ouachita. Through the endowment, the university is host each year to outstanding speakers from varying professional pursuits.

After graduation from Ouachita, Williams began a highly successful business career, including ownership of the Birkett L. Williams Ford Agency and Monarch Leasing Company in Cleveland. During the period of his ownership, Monarch was the largest independent leasing agency in North America. Williams served his profession and his community in many capacities during his lifetime, including one term as CEO of the National Automobile Dealers Association.

Williams, who died in 1980, said that his philanthropy was generated by his gratitude to Ouachita, which taught him the value of integrity.

For more information on the lecture by Fried, persons may contact Dr. Jeanna Westmoreland, dean of the school of education at Ouachita, at P.O. Box 3789, Arkadelphia, AR 71998-0001, or call (870) 245-5154, or e-mail her at: westmorelandj@obu.edu.
