LOCATION: Other villages close to Lomie include Adjela (2 km) and Abong-Mbang (120 km). Bertoua, the provincial capital, is 350 km. It takes anywhere from 6 to 9 hours to get to Bertoua using the primary modes of transportation, bush taxis and clando pickup trucks.

LOCAL CUISINE: Popular foods included leaf sauce, lots of manioc, and LOTS of bush meat.

TYPICAL DAY OF A FRIEND: Fidel, as a government employee, spent the first part of the day in the field with his wife, then usually headed off to meetings or projects. Later in the afternoon he was back at in the field, and then came home to dinner by the fire in front of his house with his family or friends.

LOCATION OF EMMA's HOUSE: Right next to the first intersection on your way into town at the top of the hill (two houses to the left on the north side). This is no longer a volunteer house and has been reclaimed by the local agriculture office.

HEALTH FACILITIES: The local clinic consists of a two room cement house that was formerly the office of agriculture. It was donated to the first volunteer in Lomie, who served before me. It had a tin roof and electricity.

SAFETY: Lomie is a small village. If you are with another person, you can go just about anywhere.

SUMMARY: Lomie is a gritty little town which makes life hard but is also admirable. Lots of politics about exploitation of resources that leave the residents subject to a lot of events beyond their control.
