I mentioned the recent death of my classmate from Smith College, Kate Jeans Gail. I attended one of three memorials held in her honor and listened to a great many stories about her life and the incredibly positive, energetic influence she had over everyone she met. Kate worked for Teach for America in New York City for the five months before her death, and she volunteered in Morocco for the Peace Corps; she has been doing volunteer work for her entire life, and she was so intensely committed to equal rights, public health issues, and environmentalism. Everyone at the memorial spoke about how her death spurred them to further commit to their own causes, and to carry on the work that she started; it made me re-consider the idea of going into teaching, or public health. Aside from your average literature-geek qualifications, I have zero experience in the direction of teaching, and I know nothing concrete about public health. But you have to pick your causes, right? You have to give back something. I'm trying to decide where I want to start.
