SOUND BITES: Imagine a house

BY MAJA BECKSTROM

Pioneer Press

Crawl through a tunnel of snow? Sleep under a goatskin tent? Climb a ladder to the front door? These are some of the ways to enter the 22 houses from around the world showcased in the children's picture book "Imagine a House" by Angela Gustafson (Out of the Box, $16.95).

Former Peace Corps volunteer Gustafson wanted to share her love of different cultures with kids and decided to focus on the homes people live in as a window into their ways of life. She and husband Brian, who live in Minneapolis with three young children, founded Out of the Box Publishing to develop similar titles.

This book introduces young readers to houses in 15 countries, from the pueblos of the southwest United States to the houseboats in the Philippines and the tent homes of North Africa and the Middle East. Along the way, kids learn about culture and geography. Each two-page spread includes colorful maps and photographs. (Available at bookstores or at www.ootbooks.com.)

Gustafson will read at 1 p.m. Saturday at Wild Rumpus Books for Young Readers, 2720 W. 43rd St., Minneapolis. Free. 612-920-5005.
