Wisconsin Woman Evacuated from Haiti
A Tomahawk woman is apparently safe after being evacuated from war-torn Haiti. Mariah Wise, 24, is a Peace Corps volunteer.
She had been working with locals in Twobwo in southwestern Haiti. They were trying to create clean water sources for the village's several hundred residents when Wise was told to flee.
Insurgents torched police outposts and threatened new attacks Friday in a spreading rebellion against President Jean-Bertrand Aristide.
Wise was taken to the Haitian capital of Port Au Prince, then later transported to the neighboring Dominican Republic. She'll fly to Peace Corps headquarters in Washington, DC, this weekend for
debriefing.
She's been in Haiti for the last seven months.
