WASHINGTON, Feb. 20 /U.S. Newswire/ -- The Aspen Institute today announced the appointment of Peter A. Reiling as executive vice president for International and Policy Programs, effective April 12, 2004. Reiling will work from the Institute's Washington, DC headquarters. He will report directly to Institute President and CEO Walter Isaacson.

In his new role, Reiling will provide leadership and oversight of the Institute's 15 policy programs, work closely with the Board of Trustees' Program Strategy Committee on new programs, and coordinate and expand the Institute's international activities.

Reiling succeeds Peggy Clark in overseeing the Institute's policy programs. Clark will assume a new position as associate director of the Ethical Globalization Initiative (EGI) at the end of March. Led by former Irish President Mary Robinson, EGI is a partnership with the Aspen Institute, the International Council on Human Rights Policy and Columbia University.

"Peter Reiling is an inspiring leader and delightful person. He's just the right individual to integrate the burgeoning global leadership network with the Aspen Institute and to manage the myriad programs we have concerned with public policy issues," said Walter Isaacson. He added: "I want to personally thank Peggy Clark for all she has done for the Institute. We are delighted she is staying within the Aspen Institute family."

Since 1996, Reiling has been president and CEO of TechnoServe, a nonprofit international organization helping entrepreneurs across Africa and Latin America to build profitable businesses in their communities with assistance from a staff of 280 local business advisors and a network of global companies.

A trustee of the Institute, Reiling is also a Henry Crown Fellow (Class of 1998). He was instrumental in the establishment of the Africa Leadership Initiative (ALI), a joint venture between TechnoServe, the Aspen Institute and four African business leaders. Modeled after the Institute's Henry Crown Fellowship Program, and soon to be replicated in Central America, ALI's goal is to stimulate a new generation of African business leaders to play a greater role in the social development of their countries. Through ALI, Reiling has co-moderated 12 Aspen- inspired leadership seminars. As a trustee of the Institute, he has been an active member of the Board's International Committee.

Recently named "Outstanding Social Entrepreneur 2004" by the Schwab Foundation in Geneva, Reiling's earlier career includes four years as resident Country director for TechnoServe in Ghana. He also served as TechnoServe's director of Policy Analysis, worked three years with the US Agency for International Development in Niger, and spent two years as a US Peace Corps volunteer in Togo.

A member of the Council on Foreign Relations and the US Advisory Committee on Voluntary Foreign Aid, Reiling speaks frequently on international economic development. He served as adjunct professor at Columbia University's School of International and Public Affairs and taught at the Institute for Developing Economies in Tokyo.

Reiling holds an MBA from the Haas School of Business at the University of California at Berkeley and a BS in Development Economics from Georgetown University. While at Berkeley, as a member of the Pacific Rim Study Group, he traveled to China and Korea to view US business ventures there. While at Georgetown, he spent four months at the headquarters of the European Community in Brussels, studying their operations. He and his wife Denise reside with their two children in the Washington DC area.
