Allison Batdorff is the new Wyoming correspondent in The Billing Gazette's Cody Bureau. Hailing from Detroit, Batdorff has worked at several newspapers, most recently the Manistee News Advocate of Manistee, Mich.
After graduating from Central Michigan University in 1997 with a degree in journalism and Spanish, Batdorff spent two years with the Peace Corps teaching English in a Ukrainian village. She then toured Southeast Asia for six months as a "travel bum."
She returned to journalism in 2000, writing occasional features for the Hamtramck (Mich.) Citizen in her free time. She liked the work so much that she traded in her nonprofit consultant status for the newsroom in 2001.
"Some people give up story time when they leave elementary school. I get to hear stories every day," Batdorff said. "I can't imagine a better job than that."
Batdorff has been the recipient of several writing awards, including a first-place finish in the 2003 Associated Press annual competition for an enterprise piece titled "The River."
An avid outdoorswoman, Batdorff paddled 193 river miles to complete the story. She also was voted the 2003 Citizen of the Year by the Manistee Conservation District for "What Lies Beneath," an investigative series on groundwater contamination.
Batdorff can be reached at (307) 527-7250. Her mailing address is P.O. Box 821, Cody WY 82414.
