Namibia needs 300 doctors, says Nujoma
CHRISPIN INAMBAO

PRESIDENT Sam Nujoma yesterday told secondary school students from the North that Namibia is a land of vast opportunities but needs hundreds of local professionals to take up positions occupied by foreigners.

Nujoma, flanked by senior presidential aides, Isaac Kaulinge and Dr Ndeutala Angoloh, was speaking at State House where he addressed 66 students and four teachers from the Onamutai Combined School in Ondangwa West.

The pupils are on a tour of various institutions in the capital.

The President said at present Namibia had a shortfall of 300 medical doctors, as well as 100 geologists who, he said, were needed to explore the country's vast mineral resources, including some rare base metals.

He said foreign professionals would ultimately have to "go back to their countries" and Namibians should prepare to take over a number of professional jobs that would be left vacant.

Nujoma said he had attained his qualifications through correspondence courses and, as a result of his confidence, he said: "I can challenge any professor in political science."

"Nujoma also said there was an urgent need for Namibians to tackle poverty through education and "to build a stronger Namibia that has no poverty"."

"This is a very rich country .... we are sitting in poverty in the midst plenty," he told the students, whom he later treated to a meal of salads, boerewors, barbecued chicken and fruit.

The students, who won essay competitions at their school, are being accompanied by Fern Holland, a US Peace Corps volunteer, Erasmus Mwiikeni, Hilie Paulus, and Andreas Nangolo, all teachers at Onamutai Combined School.
