Mozambique RPCV Rebekah Robertson on the Dayton Series on Volunteer Safety and Security

I haven't posted anything on Thoughts From Moz in a long time. When I returned to the U.S. I started a new blog called Thoughts From The District.

I know that often the people who stumble across my web site do so when looking for information about Peace Corps. So, I want to leave a link here to a 7-part series about Peace Corps by the Dayton Daily News called Casualties of Peace. Anyone thinking about joining Peace Corps should read this series so they can make an educated decision about whether serving with the Peace Corps is the right choice for them.

No one would have been able to persuade me from being a PCV. I know now how terrified my parents were for me when I served. For my Mom, this was alleviated a bit since I had a boyfriend who, both he and his family, loved me and looked out for my well-being. After my experience, I hope that my children never choose to serve with Peace Corps. There are other volunteer service groups that take better care of their volunteers, and you should research some of those before joining Peace Corps. Myself, I thought: c'mon, this is a government organization, they've got it together. But I walked away shocked at how this government organization that's been around since the 60s did not have it together.
