Niger RPCV Kathleen Jesencky dies in Baltimore

Kathleen Jesencky, a public health administrator, died of breast cancer Tuesday at her Towson home. She was 54.
Born in Trenton, N.J., she studied at St. Elizabeth's College in Convent Station, N.J., and earned a degree at George Washington University. She then volunteered in the Peace Corps and was assigned to Niger in West Africa. She later earned a master's degree in public health from the University of North Carolina.
After serving in the relief and development agency CARE, she managed nutrition and health projects in Tunisia and Haiti.
From 1984 to 1994 she was associate director for program development at Family Health International's initiative in West Africa.
For the past decade she worked at the Johns Hopkins University affiliate JHPIEGO as a program manager for a federally funded overseas family health and nutrition project. She worked to reduce maternal and infant death rates in Indonesia and Burkina Faso.
A Mass of Christian burial will be offered at 11 a.m. today at St. Stephen's Roman Catholic Church, 210 Genesee St., Trenton.
Survivors include her parents, Michael and Sally Jesencky; and a brother, Michael Jesencky, all of Trenton.
