Wild Women Wear Red

Funky U Street footwear boutique Wild Women Wear Red combines fashion and functionality, bringing a taste of New York eclecticism to black pumps 'n' athletic shoes DC. Says owner Toddrae Monier of her instantly popular offerings, "People were starving for it." Shopper and former Greenwich Village resident Rochelle Kainer of Cleveland Park agrees: "The shop makes me feel like home."

New to retail, Monier opened Wild Women Wear Red partly to satisfy her own craving for shoes that were easy on the eyes and feet -- without having to travel to New York and Toronto to get them.

What you'll find: Cutting-edge, mostly handmade styles you can actually walk in, and wallet-friendly prices from $44 to $214, by labels like Bronx NY, Cydwoq, NM70, Lisa Nading, Spain's Camper and Faryl Robin. Plus jewelry, handbags and accessories handmade by local artists and others, as well as selected clothing.

Hot trends: The western look -- fringe plus pressed, patterned, and handmade leathers. Look for hybrid mixes of the athletic style with an unexpected heel to continue through next spring.

Customer raves: Female-owned and run Faryl Robin. Hot this summer: her thong sandals decorated with real stones. Lisa Nading's sexy, comfortable eponymous line.

Insider faves: One of Monier's favorite brands is Cydwoq (say "Sidewalk") for its unique, rugged look. "Only a particular type of woman is ready for this shoe," she says.
