Smith talks up candidate
U.S. Rep. Nick Smith isn't knocking on doors for Ed Sharkey, but he put in a good word for his staffer in Washington, D.C., last week.
Sharkey, who's running for state House, was mentioned by Smith in testimony about the Peace Corps to the House's International Relations Committee. Sharkey works as Smith's district representative.
Smith quoted Sharkey, who served in the Peace Corps in Yemen from 1979 to 1981, as saying: "When Americans volunteer abroad, they have been among our most successful public diplomats," according to a statement from Smith's office.
"If the Peace Corps is to continue to achieve its mission, it must be better prepared to face the challenges of today."
Sharkey, who lives in Blackman Township, is one of four Republicans running in the 65th District.
