Anderson names chief of economic development

Almost three months after he announced the reorganization of Salt Lake City's economic development office, Mayor Rocky Anderson has hired the staff to make it happen.

On Wednesday, Alison McFarlane was formally named Anderson's senior adviser for economic development. She previously was the city's small-business economic development manager.

Edward Butterfield will take over McFarlane's previous duties as a small-business ombudsman. Butterfield, who will make $40,000, served as a volunteer in Honduras through the U.S. Peace Corps from 2001 to 2003. He worked on small-business development projects there. He has degrees in finance and economics from Utah State University.

McFarlane, who got a $15,475 raise to $89,981, will work on recruiting new businesses and retaining and expanding existing ones.

On his second day of his second term, the mayor announced plans to reconfigure economic development, moving it to his office and adding a senior adviser position. McFarlane has been doing that job since January.
