Roger K. Lewis, FAIA

B. Arch., MIT, 1964; M. Arch., 1967; Peace Corps Volunteer Architect, Tunisia, 1964-66.

Professor Lewis teaches design studio and courses in drawing and theory. He is a practicing architect and planner, and many of his projects have received awards for design. In 1986, he was elected to the College of Fellows of the American Institute of Architects. This past summer, Professor Roger Lewis led a combined group of architecture and urban planning students on the School’s first-ever program in St. Petersburg, Russia. The trip was organized by Marie Howland, Director of the Urban Studies program, and also included Matthew Bell. While in St. Petersburg, students had the opportunity to learn about the unique development problems that exist in post-communist Russia and proposed a redevelopment plan for a large block in the heart of the historic city center. (Roger is co-author of the Growth Management Handbook.) Roger highlighted the program in an article for his Washington Post series, Shaping the City. His articles have been compiled in a book of the same name, published by AIA Press. The cartoons which Roger draws to accompany his Washington Post articles were displayed in the School’s gallery in October 1995 and are now heading south to Miami, where the show, sponsored jointly by the University of Miami and the Miami Herald, will open in April at the Miami Herald building. His Post articles garnered him a United Way “IMBY” (In My Backyard) Award in 1994 for “fighting obstacles to affordable housing through increasing community awareness.” In his professional work, Roger has been concentrating his energies on designing an office park, office buildings, a community center, and housing in Florida. He has just completed a new edition of Architect? A Candid Guide to the Profession for MIT Press. In 1996, he received a Design Award from the Masonry Institute for the Mattawoman Middle School in Waldorf, MD, (designed in conjunction with FSI Design Group). Additionally, Roger is serving as design advisor to the State of Maryland World War II Memorial Commission, which is building a memorial in Annapolis.
