Peace Corps Volunteer Carl Strolle in Mauritania
Peace Corps Volunteer Carl Strolle in Mauritania
Welcome to my Mauritania page
I am currently a Peace Corps volunteer in Mauritania, an African country situated on the Atlantic coast of the continent between Morocco and Senegal. I arrived here on the 27th of June, 2003, underwent 3 months of training (known as stage in francophone countries like Mauritania) in the city of Kaedi, and now live in Nouakchott, the capital. I am an information and communications technology (ICT) volunteer, which is a subsection of small enterprise development (SED). What does that actually mean? Well, I teach some classes in the usage of standard PC software, help troubleshoot a variety problems at computer centers, and am researching creating/adapting a French-language curriculum focused on first-time computer users. But since I've only been at it for three months, I'm really just trying to figure out what I should be doing.
If your interested in a peek at life here in Mauritania, I've created a couple slide shows with pictures and descriptions of my stage experience. They are generally chronological and cover the first three months of my life in Mauritania.
* The first month in the life of a Peace Corps trainee
* From site visit to swearing in: surviving stage
Check back for more pictures and info on life in Mauritania and the Peace Corps. (Coming soon, I swear!)
