Gambia Commercial and Industry Workers Union has vehemently condemned the dismissal of three employees of Peace Corps in The Gambia.
The sacked employees, Ramatoulie Cole, Beatrice Proma and Samuel Cole had served Peace Corps for more than two decades as independent contractors. Reacting to their dismissal, the secretary general of the union, Pa Momodou KB Faal said, “how can you dismiss an employee with a memorandum of a single line. The manner in which their dismissal letter was written was disrespectful.” He said the sacking of the trio violates the Labour Act of the country’s law as it failed to give reasons for the dismissals.
The Labour leader, who said his body had never had a problem with the Peace Corps over its 35 years of existence said the sacked employees should either be reinstated or compensated with sixth months salaries.
He said previous country directors of the Peace Corps engaged their Gambian employees under “proper conditions of service” but that the new country director, Diano Sloane is a “dictator and is not fit to be where she is. Sloane acts like a demi-god who doesn’t communicate with the structures she’s supposed to.”
Pa Faal also alleged that the Peace Corps director deliberately ignored letters written to her and neglected the role of her human resource department.
