In 1992, I went to Chile as a Peace Corps volunteer. The Peace Corps is a U.S. organization that was started by President John F. Kennedy in 1961 for the purpose of
promoting awareness and understanding among people of the world.
I spent two years in the southern region of Chile in the city of Temuco. As a Peace Corps volunteer, my primary project was to be an advisor to small businesses in the region. I also started a business education program to teach high school students how to manage their own business.
As a secondary project, I taught English. My students were Mapuches, who are the indigenous people of Chile. In this photo, my students are wearing their traditional dress in celebration of their heritage. This was my first experience as an English language instructor.
