Introduction

Inco Limited, a Canadian corporation, is one of the world's premier mining and metals companies. In addition to nickel, Inco processes 13 other elements including copper, cobalt, gold and platinum.

Inco's first ore shipment was from Copper Cliff, Ontario in 1902.
Primary Metals

In Canada, primary metals operations are located in Ontario and Manitoba. At Sudbury, the Ontario Division runs one of the world's largest nickel mining, milling, smelting and refining complexes.

Copper, a co-product of nickel output, is also refined on site. Precious metals by-products are refined to an intermediate stage at Sudbury and Port Colborne, Ontario. A cobalt refinery is also located at Port Colborne.

At Thompson, some 800 kilometres north of Winnipeg, the Manitoba Division's mining operations are carried out underground. As in Ontario, there are high-capacity processing facilities.

Inco's domestic output accounts for about 10 per cent of Canada's non-fuel mineral production.

In the Pacific Rim, Inco's Indonesian subsidiary, P.T. International Nickel Indonesia (P.T. Inco), supplies nickel in matte to Japanese refineries under long-term contracts. Inco is involved in joint ventures in Japan, China, Taiwan and South Korea to provide nickel to these markets.

Inco has facilities in the United Kingdom including a nickel refinery in Clydach, Wales, and a precious metals refinery in Acton, England for its platinum-group metals and for processing concentrates, residues and scrap. Total annual production of platinum-group metals, including toll-refined materials, exceeds one million troy ounces.

During August 1996, Inco acquired Diamond Field Resources and with it the ore-rich Voisey's Bay property in Labrador, Canada. Voisey's Bay is expected to be one of the lowest-cost sources of nickel in the world.

Inco conducts geological and geophysical activities to quantify its extensive known ore reserves, and undertakes exploration in Canada and other countries for a wide range of minerals. The Company is active in more than 50 nickel, precious metals, chrome and base metals ventures and prospects worldwide.

Process research and development is conducted at laboratories in Mississauga and Sudbury, Ontario; Thompson, Manitoba; Clydach, Wales and Acton, England.
