MARSHFIELD - Jeanette Hajjar-Ewer, 76, of Marshfield, formerly of Boston's South End, died Saturday at home of cancer.
For many years, she was a very active resident of the South End.
She translated "The Book Lighted Pathway" in 1980 and edited "Middle East Customs and Traditions" in 1976.
She was a nationally known educator and authority on Middle Eastern history and culture, writing many articles and stories about the Middle East and the Boston Arab community.
She was listed in Who's Who in America.
She served with the Peace Corps in Morocco at the age of 50, made her first parachute jump at 51 and tried white water rafting at 56.
Mrs. Hajjar-Ewer was born in Boston. She received a bachelor's degree from Boston College and a master's and a Ph.D. from Brandeis University.
She is survived by her husband, Paul Ewer, and his children, Kari Finn of North Carolina and Douglas Ewer of California; a brother, Fred Hajjar of Florida; and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Annunciation Melkite Cathedral, 7 VFW Parkway, Roslindale. Burial will be at a later date.
Arrangements were made by Louis M. Kfoury Funeral Service, West Roxbury.

It is July 16, 2006, and I just learned from a friend of her passing.
She was very good to many, and to me and my children. She was also the last person on earth to have known my mother, long dead.
I admired her.
