Louis J. Cattani

NEWBURY - Louis J. Cattani, 56, of Main Street, Newbury, died May 18, 2004, at his home from cancer.

He was born Jan. 28, 1948, in Brooklyn, N.Y., son of Louis and Louise (Uhlig) Cattani. He attended Catholic elementary and high schools.

He graduated from Wagner College in Staten Island, N.Y., in 1969. After college he served as a Peace Corps volunteer in Malaysia. He then traveled extensively in Southeast Asia and the South Pacific, including Papua New Guinea. He also hitchhiked across Australia.

He married Jonnie Crawford on July 5, 1975.

In 1977 he graduated from Vermont Law School in Royalton, where he served as the first editor in chief of the Vermont Law Review. He worked as Caledonia County's deputy state's attorney for several years, and also practiced law in both Vermont and New Hampshire before his retirement in 2003.

Cattani was a parishioner and also served on the parish council at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in Bradford. He also served on the Oxbow School Board.

He enjoyed theater work, and was active with the Old Church Theater and the Tabor Valley Players, both in Bradford. He also enjoyed writing fiction, and had several short stories published. He enjoyed bowling, playing chess, golfing, kayaking and hiking.

Survivors include his wife, Jonnie (Crawford) Cattani of Newbury; sons, Joseph S. and Charles J. Cattani; his mother, Louise Cattani of Santa Rosa, Calif.; a sister, Veronica Basker of California; a nephew and niece; and many other relatives and in-laws.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, May 25, with the Rev. Father Philip LaMothe officiating. Calling hours will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, May 24, at the Hale Funeral Home in Bradford. Burial will be private.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Norris Cotton Cancer Center Administration, One Medical Center Dr., Lebanon, N.H. 03756, or to the Enfield Humane Society, Enfield, NH 03758.

The Hale Funeral Homes of Bradford and Thetford Center are in charge of the arrangements.
