A Salt Lake City resident has been awarded a Fulbright fellowship to study organic farming in Latvia.

Jennifer Keahey will examine how major social sectors -- including universities, the Ministry of Agriculture and nongovernmental organizations -- influence farmers' decisions. Keahey also will explore how joining the European Union affects Latvian agriculture. She will be based in Zemgale, Latvia's largest agricultural region.

Keahey is studying for a master's degree in international development, community and the environment at Massachusetts' Clark University. She received two bachelor's degrees at the University of Utah, one in anthropology and one in French.

From 1999 to 2002, she served in the Peace Corps in Latvia. Before entering Clark's graduate program, she worked for Salt Lake City's Catholic Community Services, specifically in immigration and refugee resettlement. She has been a volunteer coordinator and a facilitator for Afghan women's conferences in Salt Lake City.
