A 12th grade English teacher and a dyslexia specialist were named Teachers of the Year last week by Space Center Rotary in Clear Lake.

Clear Brook High English teacher Dr. Kevin Fleming was named Secondary Teacher of the Year and Ward Elementary specialist Mary French was chosen Elementary Teacher of the Year.

The awards are given annually by Rotary to honor educators in the Clear Creek School District.

As he teaches at Clear Brook High, Dr. Fleming sees himself as "a way station" to student dreams - a lifetime learner and enthusiastic educator."

His first teaching assignment was in a fishing village in South Korea, where the Peace Corps sent him. Sometime later, after also teaching in Malaysia, he studied at Oxford University in England and subsequently earned his Ph.D in English at the University of Houston.

When computers came into vogue, Fleming set up the first lab at Clear Brook High. Besides teaching English, he is also the Gifted/Talented coordinator at Brook.

All three principals he has served were there to see him win the award - Brook Principal Dr. Caryl Wilson, CCISD Superintendent Dr. Sandra Mossman and CCISD Trustee Ralph Parr.

School Board President Glenn Brown and Trustee Paula Thomas also were in the luncheon audience at the Holiday Inn in Nassau Bay.
