Retiring teachers reflect on career
Leslie Miller never thought she would become a teacher, but after spending a few years teaching English in Iran with the Peace Corps, she found she loved it.
Departing from her job teaching art at Potter Road Elementary School will not be easy for Miller.
"I will miss being in the classroom. I love it," Miller said. "I teach with wonderful teachers in this school. They taught with me, helped me and allowed me to be me."
While she enjoyed every one of her 37 years in teaching - 34 of which were in Framingham - Miller said the climate of education, in the state and in town, has changed.
"We used to work very closely on long-term projects, with all the subjects included," Miller said. "Now Framingham seems to be test, test, test."
Miller said she also felt like she was being pulled back into art.
"I went to a lecture series by professional artists and, you know, my brain thinks (like an artist)," Miller said. "I've been away from that for too long."
From her work space in the Fountain Street Studios, Miller plans to spend more time on her paper cuttings and other pieces. Eventually she may start teaching art to children.
"I think (teaching) is the best job on earth," Miller said. "But I've put my art on hold. I only do a couple commissions a year."
Always hoping to inspire her students, Miller wrote a letter to the children and families of Potter Road to say good bye. She ended it by saying, "Never lose your will to investigate, wonder and to ask, 'Why?' "

I am an American (currently living in Paris), and I'm interested in teaching English in Iran during Summer 2008, possibly up to one year. I'm having a really hard time finding any information, though some Iranian Friends of mine tell me that native speakers of English are in high demand... Any tips would be appreciated!
