The Indianapolis Star reports that Eugene Jones, former director of public housing in Indianapolis, "is applying to be assistant secretary with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development."

Al Kamen of The Washington Post reports that Stanford University law professor Joseph A. Grundfest is in the running to chair the Securities and Exchange Commission. Also, Julia Chang Bloch may be picked to head the Peace Corps. Former South Carolina governor David Beasley and assistant secretary of State Julia V. Taft are also being considered for the post.

The Columbus Dispatch reports that Ohio secretary of State J. Kenneth Blackwell may be nominated this week to a high-level appointment in the State department. Blackwell may become assistant secretary of State specializing in human rights or counselor to the department.

National Mortgage News reports that Texas utility executive Alphonso Jackson is about to be nominated as deputy secretary of HUD.

The Chieftain of Pueblo, Colorado reports that John Turner, former president of the Wyoming Senate, is a leading candidate for undersecretary of Interior.
