My name is Chris Beal. I grew up in Cook, graduated in '99, and in less than two weeks I'll be headed to the South Pacific Islands for two years as a Peace Corps Volunteer.

The nation I'm going to serve in is called Kiribati (pronounced "Keer-ee-boss"). It's a series of 33 small atolls (coral islands) about 1000 miles off the Northeast coast of Australia. The capital island, Tarawa, lies roughly halfway between Hawaii and Australia. The climate is tropical, with the average temperature in the summer being 81 degrees and in winter 79.

Quite a change from Northern Minnesota, no? I thought I'd write so that I could keep the people of Cook updated on my "adventures". I hope that I can continue to send you letters through my mother and you could perhaps post them on the Cook, MN website. That way, I could try to share the lifestyle and culture of the I-Kiribati with people on literally the other side of the world.

I'm willing to answer questions from any and all comers. I can be reached at this email
