Humanitarian worker dies at age 56

Associated Press

ATLANTA - International humanitarian worker Anthony Patrick Carey has died from complications of multiple sclerosis. He was 56.

Carey, senior vice president for programs at the poverty-fighting group CARE, died Friday in Washington, D.C.

Carey worked for CARE, headquartered in Atlanta, for 30 years holding jobs including running food programs in India and Haiti. He also had assignments in the Philippines and Bangladesh.

"Pat touched the lives of all who knew him with his honesty, compassion, candor, positive attitude and keen sense of humor," said Peter D. Bell, president and CEO of CARE. "He was a strong, principled leader who inspired the trust and confidence of his colleagues and peers."

Carey joined the Peace Corps in 1970 as a volunteer in Karnataka, India, and he later enlisted as an intern in CARE's emergency food-for-work program for landless laborers in drought-stricken areas of the country.

Since Carey became senior vice president for programs in 1997, he has worked to combat HIV, AIDS and the lack of basic education.

He also responded to emergencies around the world and his leadership is credited for landing CARE the Mildred Robbins Leet Award for the Advancement of Women by InterAction, an alliance of international development and humanitarian non-governmental organizations.

Carey is survived by his mother, brother and two sons.
