WASHINGTON, May 28 /U.S. Newswire/ -- With the release of the Hollywood disaster film, "The Day After Tomorrow", dozens of global warming activists from all across Maryland, D.C. and Northern Virginia will be visiting theaters and providing movie patrons with information designed to help them better understand the realities of global warming.
The release of the film is a "teachable moment," according to Mike Tidwell, director of the Chesapeake Climate Action Network (CCAN). Tidwell says CCAN activists will be among those from many other social and environmental organizations conducting informational leafleting outside selected movie theatres in the region throughout the Memorial Day weekend.
"While the movie compresses and dramatizes the growing threat of severe climate disruption into a two hour period, many of the disastrous consequences that are implied are possible if we continue to rely on fossil fuels as our primary source of energy," Tidwell said.
Tidwell says the reality of global warming can have a happy ending if citizens and governments get serious about clean energy and increased energy efficiency. He cited Maryland as an example where progress has begun.
"Three weeks ago, Montgomery and Prince George's County governments made the largest local government purchase of wind power ever. Two days ago, Maryland Gov. Ehrlich signed into law a requirement that Maryland utilities significantly increase development of clean electricity. And the D.C. Council is close to passing a similar bill."
Tidwell says painless advances in clean energy and energy efficiency prove citizens can effectively stop major disruptions to the climate. But he notes more needs to be done.
"The world's scientific community is nearly unanimous that human activity is accelerating the pace of global warming and raising the threat of severe climate disruption. We hope everyone who goes to see 'The Day After Tomorrow' will also take an hour or two this weekend to become more educated on the issue, and take positive action to address this very real threat to our health, property and safety."
