Ambassador Miles Swears In New Peace Corps Volunteers

U.S. Ambassador Richard Miles swore in 26 new Peace Corps volunteers today. This brings the total in the country up to 44 volunteers. Each volunteer will spend two years in Georgia. Until now, all Peace Corps volunteers have been at work teaching English at the secondary and university level, but ten of the newest group will be working with NGOs on infrastructure, community outreach, and youth programming.

The ceremony took place at the Tabakhmela Conference Center in Tabakhmela. According to Ambassador Miles, "You [the volunteers] come prepared to like Georgia and to be liked by Georgians. That sincerity is what Georgians will respect most about you. Georgians will want to like you . . . . I know you are up to the challenge." The volunteers will be living throughout Georgia in the style of ordinary people. Each host school, university and NGO survived a competitive selection process to ensure Peace Corps volunteers would have the greatest beneficial impact.

Founded in 1961, the Peace Corps has over 7500 volunteers serving in 137 countries. Most of them work as English teachers. More information can be found at www.peacecorps.gov, or by contacting the Peace Corps Office at (822) 53-72-83.
