Douglass will take over as the fifth president in the school’s history. Currently, she is the instruction and student services vice president at Lake City Community College in Lake City, Fla. Since 1999, Douglass has served as chief to both the academic office and student services.

The new position marks Douglass’ return to the Nutmeg State. From 1992 to 1999, she was the academic dean of Capital Community College in Hartford and in 1996 she served as acting president upon Dr. Conrad Mallett’s retirement.

"We look forward to having Dr. Douglass rejoin our Connecticut system of community colleges," board of trustees Vice Chairman Louise Berry said in a writing statement. "Dr. Douglass is well known for her dedication to teaching and learning. During her time in Connecticut she was recognized as a talented academic leader, and she has been extremely successful in advancing the institutions she has served."

Douglass held several positions at San Diego College from 1980 to 1992, including dean for labor relations and dean of continuing education. She was a project leader and instructor for the San Diego Community College District from 1975 to 1980.

In the mid-1970s, Douglass was an instructor for the Peace Corps teaching English to secondary school students in the Republic of Zaire.

Douglass holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Massachusetts, Boston, a master’s degree in education from United States International Univer-sity in San Diego and a Ph.D. in education administration from the University of Texas, Austin.
