Reagan was an idealist without being ultimately ideological says Peter McPherson
"It was a sad day. When the casket was taken out of the cathedral by the pallbearers, we knew we saw the last thing physical of Ronald Reagan. The 1980s seemed like yesterday, but it was also a different world out there. When you think back, it wasn't at all clear that we would prevail in the Cold War. We were under pressure from the Soviets. But by rebuilding the military ... America was saying 'we are going to stand up.' The Soviet archives now tell us that it was a very successful strategy. Reagan was tough but was willing to negotiate, to figure out new approaches to old problems. He was an idealist without being ultimately ideological." -- Peter McPherson, President of Michigan State University and Administrator of the Agency for International Development in the Reagan Administration.
