And speaking of McNally, there was also a letter this week from John Barnes of Lyme taking issue with my column last week. Barnes, a McNally supporter, expressed "disappointment" in the column that dealt with Sullivan's recent meeting with the Democratic Congressional Caucus in Washington, D.C.

Specifically, Barnes was upset that nowhere in the column was McNally mentioned, charging that such an exclusion was "an affront to the voters of Eastern Connecticut."

I'm not going to take issue with Mr. Barnes; his opinion is as valued as any of the others. But I do believe some clarification is in order.

McNally's campaign has certainly been covered by this newspaper.

In fact, on his own campaign Web page is a copy of the article from this paper where he called for the immediate withdrawal of American troops from Iraq. I might add that the Norwich Bulletin was one of only two newspapers that gave that call any publicity.

And not so long ago, McNally was the subject -- the sole subject -- of one of these Sunday columns.

McNally's candidacy is not being excluded or ignored. It's just that lately Simmons and Sullivan are the ones generating the kind of interest that fill the mailboxes.
