Meehan Announces Peace Corps Investigation of Poirier Disappearance

June 24, 2004

Washington, DC – Congressman Marty Meehan (D-MA) today announced that the Peace Corps has agreed to appoint an investigator to look into the disappearance of Peace Corps Volunteer Walter Poirier. Poirier, a Lowell, MA native, has been missing from his mission in Bolivia since May of 2001.

Congressman Meehan, with Senators Kennedy and Kerry, sent a letter earlier this month to Peace Corps Director Gaddi Vasquez requesting that the Peace Corps designate an individual to determine what happened to Poirier, whose family has never had closure on the case.

A GAO investigation, requested by Congressman Meehan in 2001, concluded that the Peace Corps was failing to sufficiently track its volunteers.

Congressman Meehan made the following statement:

“I am pleased that the Peace Corps has finally committed to hiring an investigator. Walter Poirier has been missing for over three years and yet the Poirier family has not been able to find closure. I hope that now the Poiriers are closer to learning what happened to their son.”

“Unfortunately, similar tragedies have befallen other families of Peace Corps volunteers. Just a few weeks ago I was proud to support the bipartisan Health, Safety, and Security of Peace Corps Volunteers Act. With its passage and the action taken by the Peace Corps as a result of the Poirier family’s tireless efforts, we can hope that no family will have to go through such a painful experience.”

Has anything been done by the Peace Corps to hire a special investigator of Walter Poirier's disappearance?
Have the petitioners - Kennedy, Kerry and Meehan - followed through on their sincere request?
How can we vote for guys who don't "follow through"?
