Dulin honored

High marks to Chippewa Middle School's seventh-graders for their community outreach.

The members of Sandy Williams' world cultures classes dedicated their efforts to the late Carrie Dulin, a former student of Williams'. Dulin was involved with Habitat for Humanity and Appalachian service projects, and she was a Peace Corps and World Vision volunteer in Armenia for five years. She died in a car crash in Uzbekistan on Aug. 2, 2003, on her way to an assignment in Nigeria.

Here is a partial list of the Chippewa students' volunteer activities:

Tutoring a special education student three times a week; raking and mowing for the elderly; helping out at Doylestown Health Care Center; crocheting scarves for the homeless; collecting videos and books for Akron Children's Hospital; collecting food for Doylestown Food Cupboard; collecting clothes for Goodwill in Barberton and shoes for an orphanage in Lahatte, Haiti; cleaning up Doylestown Memorial Park; buying two flocks of chickens for the poor through the Heifer International Project.

Also, collecting aluminum cans for Aluminum Cans for Burned Children, toys for an inner-city summer block party through the Episcopal Church of the Holy Spirit; purchasing nonperishable items for the troops in Iraq; caring for animals at Tallmadge Animal Hospital for two months.

Williams was bowled over by their efforts.

``I firmly believe that we must teach our children more about being peacemakers,'' she said. ``If they start at a young age and learn how it is everyone's responsibility to serve others, it will come naturally to them as adults.''
